WVU CED introduces new autism resource directory and interactive map

The WVU CED has announced a new autism resource directory and interactive map to help connect families to important services in West Virginia. Filterable by service type and county, the database provides quick access to provider websites and contact information, whereas the interactive map allows families to see which services are closest to home. Both tools are the first of their kind in the state.

Lesley Cottrell, CED Director, and Cortland Nesley, Program Manager of the Traumatic Brain Injury program and member of the autism community, recently provided insight into the significance of the database and map for WVUToday's Expert Pitch series.

“With this new directory, our team is hoping to supplement important resources in a state that has heavy waitlists. We also want to help families navigate services when needed. This includes supports for the individual of any age and family members who provide support," said Cottrell.

“April is a great time to take stock, reflect and engage in critical dialogue about the autistic community and its needs. It is important to make sure autistic voices are at the center of autistic discourse. Lived experience knowledge is legitimate knowledge. Assume competency, even if communication occurs in a different way," added Nesley.
